Rhea Chakraborty's Brother Showik Gets Relief From Special Court, Charge Of Financing Illicit Drug Trafficking Dismissed

In a huge relief for Rhea Chakraborthy’s Showik Chakraborty, a special court has now ruled that the charges of financing trafficking or trading of drugs do not apply to him based on his case. Showik who spent three months behind bars after being arrested in September 2020 on charges of drug trafficking was released on bail by an NDPS Court last week.

The Narcotics Control Bureau had taken the 24 year student into custody alleging that he procured drugs from peddlers and also sold them. While his sister and actress Rhea Chakraborty was granted bail in the drugs case Showik’s bail plea was rejected several times on the grounds that he had a direct link with drug suppliers. Section 27 A of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was invoked in his case by the NCB and if they proved the charges Showik could be looking at a jail sentence of upto 20 years.

The special court also referenced to Bombay High Court’s bail order for Rhea Chakraborthy who was released from prison on similar grounds. The court has said that Rhea’s procuring drugs doesn’t prove she in any manner financed the trade of selling drugs. The special court also observed that no drugs were procured from Showik’s possession and those in possession of the co-accused did not reflect on him.

The NCB, on the other hand, had been opposing Showik’s bail and as proof submitted statements of co-accused people including that of Rhea’s. The statements were considered as inadmissible based on Supreme Court’s month old order stating at an accused connot be convicted on confessional statements.
