Business in Bollywood has come to a standstill amidst the coronavirus scare that has taken over the globe. While by now we would have hopefully heard of Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 3 inching close to the Rs. 200 crore club and would have witnessed the stellar opening of Rohit Shetty and Akshay Kumar’s Sooryavanshi, we sit in our homes trying to ward off one of the biggest health emergencies of our times.

Reflecting on the handful of movies we got to witness since the beginning of this year, Ajay Devgn and Saif Ali khan’s Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior [Rs. 279.50 croroes] is the only hit we have so far. Tiger’s Baaghi 3 and Irrfan Khan’s Angrezi Medium run was rather rudely interrupted by the shutting down of theatres and the films await a re-release. The only two other movies that had an average run were Ayushmann Khurrana’s gay romance Shubh Mangal Zyadaa Saavdhan [ Rs. 60.78 crores] and Disha Patani, Aditya Roy Kapur’s thriller Malang [Rs. 58.99 crores].

Saif Ali Khan, however, has emerged the big winner in the scenario thanks to his two films that have released so far in the year, Tanhaji and Jawaani Jaaneman. Not only has the actor won several accolades for both films as far as performances go but also thanks to these films he stands as the highest-grossing actor in the first quarter of 2020 in Bollywood. The grand total of his two films together stands at Rs. 308.53 crores.

Ajay Devgn follows with one film and its total business of Rs. Rs. 279.50 crores, with Tiger Shroff standing third who’s Baaghi 3 earned Rs. 93.37 crores so far and will re-release in theatres soon after the lockdown is over.

The first quarter in Bollywood is already nearly over and by this time last year Bollywood had five big hits with Kesari, Badla, Lukka Chuppi, Gully Boy and Uri: The Surgical Strike.

While Bollywood faces losses of an average Rs. 80 crores weekly due to the coronavirus lockdown, to call it a dampened start to the year would be an understatement
