Sanya Malhotra on criticism of her playing a Tamilian in Meenakshi Sundereshwar: 'Glad to play characters from varied cultures'

Meenakshi Sundereshwar is all set to release on 5th of November. The film, which stars Sanya Malhotra and Abhimanyu Dassani, is about a long-distance shaadi of a couple. But, right from the teaser release, there has been much criticism about the film, on the grounds that two North Indian actors were chosen to portray south Indian characters. Now, Sanya has responded to those criticisms.

Taking to Mid Day, Sanya said, “I played a Gujarati in Photograph [2019], Punjabi in Badhaai Ho [2018] and Rajasthani in Pataakha [2018]. I’m glad to play characters from varied cultures. I am an actor, and my job is to work on my character. I will do my homework. I wasn’t a wrestler, but we learnt it before we stepped in front of the camera for Dangal. I can’t control what the audience thinks, but I will give my 100 per cent. Why would I say no when a part is calling out to me so strongly? Meenakshi is a Rajinikanth fan, so I watched a few of his films. I had to pick up one of his Tamil dialogues. My diction coach and some Tamilian crew members helped me out.”

Well, do you agree with Sanya? Let us know in the comments.
