Sara Ali Khan Doesn't Feel Coolie No. 1 Was Problematic, Says There's A Difference Between What's Said On Twitter & A Comedy

Mindless entertainers have ruled the roost in Bollywood for a long time but as the sensitivity around content grows so do the efforts of the makers in ensuring that their films sail smoothly warding off all controversy. In the midst of all of this comes the remake of the 25 year old Govinda and Karisma Kapoor starrer Coolie. No. 1 which was all about how a porter tries to dupe a wealthy woman by wooing her but instead falls in love with her.

The original even with its problematic romance was a big hit and now Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan are bringing back the story in a modern day adaptation which is also helmed by David Dhawan, the director of the original. Commenting on the plot of the film Sara has urged the audiences to keep an open mind while watching her upcoming comedy.

Talking about her version of Coolie No. 1 Sara in an interview with Mid-Day tried to defend the original and said there’s a difference between opinionated Twitter posts and the intentions of a comedy. "I'd urge people to watch the film with the honest intention with which it is told. There is a difference between what you say on Twitter, and what an entertaining comedy tries to say. If everybody [expects] everything to be politically correct, any scope of humour in our lives will be [lost]. Of course, you can't be demeaning. Govinda sir duping Karisma to make her believe that he is not a coolie, is funny. It's not about him cheating. Ultimately, he falls in love with her, and that's what most of us look forward to in life,” she told the publication.

Sara also spoke about the pressure of re-creating Karisma’s role in the film and said that the point wasn’t to imitate her. "Govinda and Karisma are institutions in themselves; one shouldn't even try to copy them,” she said.

Coolie No. 1 will release on Amazon Prime Video this Christmas.
