Shahid Kapoor’s Kabir Singh has managed to become the highest grosser of the year and even after more than a month after its release, is going steady at the box office. In fact, it is now the tenth all-time highest grosser of Bollywood but to say that this journey has not been very smooth would be an understatement.

Despite the phenomenal box-office response, the film has been severely criticized by the critics and a certain section of the audience. It has been accused of glorifying misogyny and toxic masculinity and has sparked off a serious controversy, especially around that one scene of Kabir slapping Preeti in the film. While director Sandeep Reddy Vanga has come forward and defended the film, Shahid Kapoor herself has preferred to remain silent on the mounting controversies.

Finally, Shahid has broken his silence and come forward to defend the character that has given him the biggest hit of his career. In a recent interview with a popular entertainment portal, Shahid has said, “If Kabir hadn't slapped Preeti, would everything else that he did be okay? Because he slapped the girl, you feel that is unacceptable and that Kabir Singh is an unacceptable character. We want you to feel this is unacceptable, his behavior has gone beyond control. Kabir Singh is the guy who the film is about and he is the guy who's the problem.

In the interview, Shahid also opened up about why he has preferred to stay quite throughout the raging debate and controversies surrounding the film. He said, “The reason I didn't do an interview is because I felt everyone was very aggressive. And I didn't think it was healthy. I didn't want to come out attacking anybody. I didn't want to come out defending a film. I wanted to speak about a film like a film should be spoken about.”

He further went on to add, “It's interesting to see people, who make weekend conversation over it, seem to feel so much more of a sense of ownership on the film than those people who actually spent a year making it.”

Talking about the support that he received from audiences, Shahid said, “My fans have always been with me. The most amazing film about this film was that I didn't need to promote the film after it released. I didn't need to defend the film from the things that were being said about it. People who saw the film were doing everything for me. I felt like I was sitting at home and there is an army out there which is doing everything on its own, that just goes to show that people connected with the product. And they were very very strong about how they felt. Maybe the way Kabir loves Preeti, is the way people love this film. Something about the film has made that connect with people.”

He also spoke up about how his wife Mira Rajput has been a huge support and in fact was the one who encouraged him to take up the script.
