Sharmila Tagore Talks About Lack Of Work Ageing Actresses In Bollywood, Says Rules For Stars Like Mr. Bachchan Are Different

Sharmila Tagore has long been missing from the big screen despite being one of the biggest names in Bollywood back in the day. The veteran actress, however, blames her absence on the lack of work for aging heroines in the industry and says that rules veterans like Amitabh Bachchan are different.

Speaking to Spoteboye, Sharmila made a case for actresses while speaking of her absence from films and said, “It happens to all actresses beyond a certain age in our cinema. Even Madhuri Dixit who is a lot younger has not done anything much in spite of Dedh Ishqiya. Whereas the rules are different for Mr Bachchan. He has directors like Shoojit Sircar calling him ‘Sir’ and writing roles for him.”

Calling Amitabh an icon Sharmila said that rules in the industry are often biased to male actors. Taking the example of the mega star’s film Te3n Sharmila Tagore said that while was the remake of a Korean film with a female protagonist, it was re-written to accommodate a male star instead. Talking about actresses in this context she asks, “Who does these things for female actors  in  Hindi cinema?” and adds, “But then, on the other hand, who would go to see Pink if Mr. Bachchan didn’t play the lawyer.”

Dismissing the claims that older male actors tend to be sidelined too, Sharmila said that it has mostly to do with their age or health and said that despite his age Dharmendra remains so much in demand. Talking about herself, the Aradhana actress says that she doesn’t miss being on screen that she’s not been single mindedly focused on acting despite her love for the craft.
