Sidharth Malhotra Breaks Silence On Masakali 2.0 Controversy; Reveals It Was Originally A Promotional Song For Marjaavaan

After winning hearts with their sizzling chemistry in Marjaavaan, the handsome Sidharth Malhotra and the gorgeous Tara Sutaria reunited for the remake of AR Rahman’s Masakali from Sonam Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan’s film Delhi-6. Recreated by Tanishk Bagchi and helmed by Tulsi Kumar and Sachet Tandon, Masakali 2.0 was given a sexy spin and the music video was very different. However, fans were disappointed and makers of the original song also took to social media to criticize the revamped version.

In a recent chat with film critic Rajeev Masand, Sidharth opened up about the controversy. When asked if he has been paying attention to the tweets, the actor shared, “Of course we get marked (on tweets), we are part of this song. It happened vis a vis a movie, Marjaavaan, as a promotional song at that time. It’s very easy for people to say--I mean everyone is to blame for it as a team--but I have done remakes in the past of different artistes. Whether it was Kaala Chashma or Chull, they have all been recreations and they have all worked really well in the past. There is no conversation of whether I endorse it or not endorse it. Whether it is good or bad.”

Rajeev further asked if he understands the outrage of the audience and Sidharth replied, “I keep thinking from an actor’s point of view, if someone had to remake a film that I have been a part of and it has not been done with utmost taste or to someone’s satisfaction, of course it can be annoying. So in that case, yes, it is completely valid.” He went on to share that he feels the remix trend is dying. He stated, “I don’t think the audience has the patience now or they are not excited by the fact that we are not really creating new melodies. So as an audience, as a listener, I completely agree. As an actor also, I would get far more excited with a brand new song.”
