Sonam Kapoor talks about pay disparity in the film industry; says ‘I can stand up to it, but then I don’t get those roles’

One of the most popular and sought after actresses of Bollywood, the OG diva Kareena Kapoor Khan was recently in the news after she reportedly asked for ₹12 crore to play Sita in a film. While many criticized her, actress Taapsee Pannu came out in Bebo’s support and stated that if a man had demanded more money for a film, people would have said ‘iski market badh gayi hai’. But because a woman has hiked her fee, which is well within her rights, she is being slammed and is being called difficult.

Well, in a recent chat with Mid Day, Kareena’s Veere Di Wedding co-star Sonam Kapoor Ahuja opened up about pay disparity in the film industry. She shared that while the depiction of women on-screen has improved over the years, the industry is far from being equal. Sonam was quoted saying, “The pay gap is ridiculous. I can stand up to it, but then I don’t get those roles, and I’m okay with that. I can afford to do that. I realised over the past two or three years that I have no right to judge anybody. I’m privileged, so making difficult choices isn’t really f**king difficult.”

Sonam is currently busy gearing up for her next film, Blind. Directed by Shome Makhija and co-produced by Sujoy Ghosh, the crime thriller is a remake of the 2011 Korean film of the same name. It follows the story of a blind police officer searching for a murderer. The film is different from anything Sonam has done in the past.
