Spider-Man led by Tom Holland might have been the next big thing for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers Endgame but in a shocking twist of events in the real world, the character will no longer be a part of the superhero troop Avengers anymore.

The news came after a falling out between Disney (that owns MCU) and Sony Pictures that hold the original rights to the character. Spider-Man will only feature in films produced by Sony. Peter Parker made his way into the Marvel movies after the makers entered into an understanding with Sony in 2015 and the agreed to share the rights.

Spider-Man has so far featured in five MCU movies including Captain America: Civil War (2016), Spider-Man Homecoming (2017), Avengers Infinity War (2018), Avengers Endgame (2019) and Spider-Man Far From Home (2019).  The issue is essentially is reported to be related to profit sharing where it is being said that Disney now wanted a 50/50 share in profits on the futures films and that was turned down by Sony.

Disney, in turn, pulled the plug on the character and also withdrew Marvel chief Kevin Feige as the producer of future Spider-Man films.

Sony announced the rather disheartening news in a statement on Tuesday evening.

“We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live-action Spider-Man film,"  the official Twitter account of Sony Pictures read. “We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own. Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue,” they added.

A statement is still to be issued by Disney on the matter.
