Taapsee Pannu Is Our Current Favorite For Not Letting Box-Office Dictate Her Movie Choices

Pick any interview of any star and you will notice there is one common question thrown at them. We are talking about our undying curiosity to understand how actors chose which film they want to be a part of.

While most of them swear that they chose instinctively, the truth is much of it is dictated by the box-office adventure of their previous films. Every once in a while when an actor is getting lucky, there is generally a tendency to veer towards experimentations, but the moment as many as two experiments fail they quickly get on board with formula driven ‘safe bets’,

But if there is one actor who is dispelling this notion and doing a pretty darn good job at it, its Taapsee Pannu.

We sat up and took note of her in Pink which challenged too many notions and gave us a movie that we were genuinely proud of. Shining like the brightest star in the gritty drama was Taapsee who with her performance announced that she is not here to play by the rules. She followed it up with poles opposite Judwaa 2 and that is probably the only time she has us doubting her.

But then with Baby and her own spin-off Naam Shabana she showed that she is not afraid of taking risks and in fact enjoys it.

Especially last year, she starred in four movies that were as different as they could be from each other and sadly none of them performed too well at the box-office. But slowly, Taapsee is becoming an actor whose box-office performances pales in comparison to her shining acting chops.

She started the year with a dismal flop like Dil Junglee. While many would have tried to go ahead and seek refuge in formula cinema, Taapsee followed it up with intense and powerful roles in films like Soorma, Mulk and Manmarziyaan.

Yet again, the films failed to rake in money but audiences just could stop raving about her. What’s interesting is, both in Soorma and Manmarziyaan she played hockey and her in a courtroom drama like Mulk gave serious Pink throwbacks. But her finesse as an actor made sure that the characters were fresh and unknown despite having common traits.

By sheer strength of her performances, Taapsee has built a certain bankability where any leading director in Bollywood today would not think too many times before making her a part of big-budget formulaic potboilers. But her upcoming films are a testament to the fact that she is not falling for the trope.

The year 2019 has already seen her in an intense thriller like Badla, which again, is winning her accolades and she will follow it up with films like Mission Mangal, Saand Ki Aankh which again goes to show her individuality and a broad range

When actors today are running behind box-office blindly and letting the collections define not just their careers but also them as an artist, Taapsee and her quiet defiance is something we find incredibly refreshing and reassuring.
