Vicky Kaushal starrer Sardar Udham Singh to see a direct digital release in October; here's why

Many films missed their orginial release dates due to the coronavirus pandemic last year after a lockdown was announced and theatres were shut down. During this time, Shoojit Sircar was one of the first filmmakers of our country who decided to take the digital road for his much awaited film Gulabo Sitabo. Many others followed suit, much to the delight of movie lovers who got to attend premieres from their couch at home. Well, according to latest buzz, Sircar is now planning a direct digital release for his next film, Sardar Udham Singh.

Starring Vicky Kaushal in the lead, the biopic was announced in 2019. It was wrapped later that year and the team began post-production work hoping for the pandemic situation to get better. Sadly, the condition is still not as favorable for cinemas as we expected. Talking about the digital premiere, a source told Pinkvilla, “Sardar Udham Singh will premiere directly on Amazon Prime Video during the Dussehra weekend. The tentative release date at the moment is October 16 and the team is supremely excited to present their film to the audience. It was meant for a theatrical viewing; however, an unprecedented situation has resulted in a direct to OTT premiere.”

The source further explained, “In-fact, Shoojit and co. had sold Gulabo Sitabo to Amazon in the early days of pandemic only because they could hold on to Sardar Udham Singh for a theatrical release. It has been 15 months since then, and the virus is still hovering around the globe. The exhibition section too is far off from revival and given the kind of money involved in the film, the makers thought, it’s best to arrive in the digital world.”

Were you looking forward to the film’s release on the big screen, or are you more excited about a digital premiere?
