Vivek Oberoi Was Told Signing Saathiya Was A 'Terrible Decision', Was Asked To Stick To Action After Debuting With Company

Vivek Oberoi recently celebrated 19 years of his debut film Company last week. The actor whose macho avatar was widely appreciated in the Ram Gopal Verma movie went on to surprise fans in a big way with Saathiya in the same year. While both films are gems in his filmography today the actor reveals that after Company he was advised against signing playing a romantic hero in Saathiya and many called the idea a ‘career killer’.

The actor who was nominated for the Filmfare Best Actor Award for Saathiya reveals that even his mentor in Bollywood, RGV, had asked him to stick to action after a debut like Company and told him not to sign Shaad Ali’s Saathiya.

Talking about fighting sterotypes at the very onset of his career Vivek told Times Of India, “When I made a decision to do ‘Saathiya’, everyone, including my mentor RGV, was really upset and told me that it was a terrible decision. They told me it's a career killer and that I was crazy. I had just established myself as a man's man and people advised me to continue doing action movies. But I was an actor. I just wanted to do every different colour of cinema.”

Stereotyping continues for Vivek even after Saathiya who revealed that after the success of the film people then wanted to see him only do romantic films. He, however, refused to settle for one or the other and continued experimenting with films.

Vivek also spoke about filmmaker Mani Ratnam complimenting him for Saathiya and revealed that it was because of the film he was isgned on for Yuva, another setllar project in his filmography.
