When Irrfan Khan's Mother Questioned His Decision Of Becoming An Actor: 'Kya Tu Abhi Yahi Naachne Gaane Ka Kaam Karega?'

Irrfan Khan is known for the serious roles he has portrayed on the silver screen in the Bollywood repertoire. But when one talks about the actor today, it is not just limited to the Bollywood scene, he has managed to carve a name for himself in Hollywood as well.

It was on Saturday, 25 April, that Irrfan Khan’s mother Saeeda Begum passed away. She was 95 years old. Out of Irrfan Khan’s own admission, he belonged to a family where cinema was not talked about. In fact, any conversation that pertained to Hindi films was a taboo.

Today, Irrfan Khan is one of the most celebrated actors in Bollywood. He has managed to win the hearts of many through his compelling performances. Having said that, the journey he undertook to reach this position was surely not easy.

Irrfan’s family background compelled the actor to be reticent about his love for films and he had spoken about this on a talk show called Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai. Actress Raveena Tandon used to host the celebrity talk show back then. During the episode which features Irrfan as the celebrity guest, Raveena had commented, “You have done some marvellous films but you are barely noticed in any song and dance numbers.”

To this, the actor revealed, “Before I was to be a part of the industry my mother asked me, ‘Kya ab tu naachne gaane ka hi kaam karega?’ Irrfan further revealed that this was the time he was got an admission to do his masters at the National School of Drama in New Delhi.

The actor told his mother, “please aap mujhpe bharosa rakhe, mai aapko kabhi sharmindgi mehsoos nahi hone dunga. Naachne Gaane Ke Ilaawa mai dusre bhi kaam karunga jo aapko acha lagega” ( please trust me, I will not embarrass you. Besides singing and dancing I will do other things which will make you proud.)

Irrfan Khan did manage to keep his word. He did some landmark in Indian cinema and we hope, we continue to see him in such films in the future as well.
