Raj Kapoor was the original showman. His films are a landmark in Indian cinema. He has inspired millions with his work and his films continue to be an inspiration to this very day. Be it Awara or Mera Naam Joker or Sangam or Satyam Shivam Sundaram or Ram Teri Ganga Maili. His films were one of a kind and not to forget they were also massive box office hits!

And, not to forget, Raj Kapoor the man, too was extremely appealing to the women, especially because of how he understood women and of course his looks! He was a broad, fair-skinned man with blue eyes and a sensibility that was a far cry from the others at that point in time. Therefore, it is no surprise that most women were in love with him

Raj Kapoor got married at the young age of 22 to Krishna Malhotra. By then he had already appeared in a number of films.

During Sangam, the director, was working with the beautiful Vyajayantimala. The proximity of the two on the sets of the film became a talking point of the tabloids back in the ‘60s. There were many reports about the duo having an affair.

It was in his autobiography Khullam Khulla, that Rishi Kapoor (Raj’s son) opened up about the two saying that his father did whatever he could to woo back his mother Krishna Raj Kapoor who was volatile due to Raj Saab’s affair with Vyayantimala. Krishna took her sons and left Kapoor Saab to move into the Nataraj hotel

In his book, Rishi pens, “I remember moving into the Natraj hotel on Marine Drive with my mom during the time Papa was involved with Vyjayantimala. From the hotel, we shifted for two months into an apartment in Chitrakoot. My father had bought the apartment for mom and us. He did all he could to woo her back, but my mother wouldn’t give in until he (Raj Kapoor) had ended that chapter in his life.”

Well, Vyjantimala was not the only woman who Raj Saab looked up to and was inspired by, he also was too close with actress Padmini (who essayed) the role of Meena in Raj Saab’s Mera Naam Joker. The showman was also linked with Zeenat Aman during the filming of Satyam Shivam Sundaram and the world knows about the torrid affair he had with Nargis too.

However, all of this cannot take away from the fact that he was a genius when it came to the cinema and the amalgamation of entertainment with art. He was a director par excellence and they don’t make filmmakers like him anymore.
