Yami Gautam Wanted To Give Up On Fair And Lovely Ads Post Her Debut Says But That Isn't The Solution

Yami Gautam is reuniting with her Vicky Donor co-star Ayushmann Khurrana for her upcoming film Bala and but there is one thing that hasn’t changed in all these years since her debut is the flak she receives for endorsing a fairness cream. Bala is already under the radar of netizens who find Bhumi Pednekar’s darkened skin tone in the film problematic and that is aside from all the controversies the film is already facing due to its story and release. Yami no doubt was dragged into this dark skin debate and the actress took the opportunity to prove a point with Bala saying that since she’s doing a film that talks about the stigma around dark skin, points to the fact that she knows what she’s doing.

The actress also addressed the age-old Fair and Lovely controversy and finally tried to put it to bed saying that soon after her film Vicky Donor released she spoke to the brand to re-work their ads. The actress also said that her leaving the brand would be no solution but the issue needs to be resolved from the very grass root.

Talking to Quint during the promotions of Bala Yami said, "All this 'gorapan ' and the kind of ads which were being made, thankfully aren't there anymore. They shouldn't be. The fact that I am part of a film like Bala, where the issue is highlighted, shows that I know what I'm doing."

The actress also spoke about how the perspective of brand she endorses and said, “People don't know that right after Vicky Donor... I had a meeting with the brand. I said, 'Listen guys, there is no problem promoting the brand. You have fairness and tanning creams abroad. But the idea to show that not being fair is something to be unhappy about, that's not right.' Maybe the name Fair & Lovely has been retained, so it is difficult to see beyond that, but the four faces are gone."

We hope that the audiences understand where she is coming from and that after the film releases it doesn’t stir up another controversy. Bala is the story of a guy facing premature balding while Bhumi Pednekar essays the role of a dark skinned girl facing issues in a fairness obsessed world.
