Theatres might have closed down in India for an indefinite period of time due to the pandemic caused by the novel Coronavirus, but that does not mean the audiences would not be able to enjoy a new film. All thanks to the OTT platforms, we have new movies at our disposal, to be watched whenever we like. And it is through a film on the OTT platform that Aditya Rawal, who happens to be Paresh Rawal's son and Arjun Reddy star Shalini Pandey decided to make their acting debut. We are talking about Bamfaad, that released on Zee5. The small town hinterland love story takes it own course, but instead of being bamfaad, it leaves a not-so-delectable aftertaste.
The film tries to follow the same formula. Naate aka Nasir Jamal is a 'bamfaad launda' who knows no fear. He lives for his friends and can do anything for them, even take a 'panga'. When he meets the 'bamfaad' Neelam, sparks fly. But of couse, she has some history and a past. Everything boild down to Jigar Fareedi, played by Vijay Varma, who plots with Naate's friend Zahid, played by Jatin Sarna, to get him out of the way. So expect fights, dialogue baazi, pyaar mohabbat and even dhokha. All's well till here, but the only thing missing is the bamfadness of the script and the narrative that actually goes for a toss. In fact, the characters try to reiterate their kickassery for way too long and by the second half, you don't really know why the title had been what it is! Had they been trying to mock themselves?
Now this being said, the film is actually important. The script maybe loose and the characters needed more depth and to be more rounded, but the talented starcast acts as a good foil. They actually take this lacklustre script way up the game. This is Aditya Rawal's debut film and man, he deserves all the praises and love. He gets into the skin of Naate. Right from his body language to dialogue delivery, he is just acing it. He makes the film his own and gives his everything to every scene he is in.
Shalini Pandey has been a popular name down south and her fame skyrocketed with Arjun Reddy. Here she isn't the coy girl but a woman who stands for what she thinks right. While we have almost nothing to complaint about when it comes to her acting, her character deserved so much more. Also, what's the obssession of filmmakers with her dupatta really? Or getting her slapped for that matter?

Jatin Sarna had limited time and he plays the scheming friend pretty well. But honestly, I expected more from him. Vijay Varmais fabulous as always and even though his character is sketchy, he tries to play it with utmost earnestness.
The film has been directedby Ranjan Chandel, who has been popular in Bollywood as a script writer. There lies my biggest issue. How can a man, who has given some of the most amazing scripts in Bollywoodgo so wrong in his directorial? The film fails to bind you in its narrative, something that becomes even more important for OTT films where the audiences have the liberty to pause nad play as and when they like. This film fails to hold internet and just gets all over the place many a times.
This is an interfaith love story and the mention of 'kom' dies come up in the film. However, it is left unexplored like many other aspects.
All in all, watch the film for Aditya Rawal, who shows great promise and spark and for Shalini Pandey.
