Pataakha Review: An Explosion Of Emotions That Will Make You Delightfully Giddy!
- Authors: Zinia Bandyopadhyay (Editorial Team)
Cast: Sanya Malhotra, Sunil Grover, Vijay Raaz
Director: Vishal Bhardwaj
Vishal Bharadwaj is finally back after a long time. The last time we saw him was last year with the forgettable Rangoon that spiraled in way too many directions and was dampened by an over-dramatic climax scene, that, honestly, was quite unnecessary.
But now after almost another one and a half years, the writer-director-producer is back with the tale of two firecracker sisters. The film, initially named Chhuriyaan, is an adaptation of Charan Singh Pathik's short story Do Behnein. To turn a short story into a film can be daunting and when this involves a particular setting that is absolutely opposite to what the actors are in their daily lives, the film tread on dicey grounds and there is significant risk involved.
In this film, there are quite a few. The actors are almost new and are yet to make a name for themselves. The setting is rural and the actors would have to be something opposite to what they are. The film is also set in a village in Rajasthan and the characters would, therefore, have to speak in Rajasthani accent. Needless to say, apart from filmmaking, the film does involve a lot of dedication from the actors. And this is probably where the fate of the film mainly lay.
And thankfully, all the actors have come out with flying colors. The film rest mainly on the shoulders of the fairly new actresses. Radhika Madan is a seasoned Tv actress but TV and film are two entirely different mediums. We have seen her as goody two shoe bahu who would fight for her love. But Pataakha was arevelation for her. What a talent she is. Once on screen, you’ll hardly see Radhika anyway. She completely transformed into Badki aka Champa. The mannerisms to the looks had been brought out perfectly. A Bollywood debut should definitely look like this and expect her to sweep quite a few awards this year!
The same is true for Sanya Malhotra as well. Dangal might have an extremely successful film, but it did not have Sanya Malhotra. Pataakha is an open canvas to her where she plays a very different level of the game. She perfects the characters of Chutki/ Genda. From her broken English to even how she walked, it was perfect.
But what is most delightful is how the sisters fight. These fights keep their soul alive. They are both Patakhaas and when they collide, it will make you delightfully giddy.
Talking about the performances, Sunil Grover keeps his own hold within the strong performances of the ladies of the film. He plays Dipper and he works like petrol who ignites every fight! His timings are like the cherry on the cake and he has been given the best dialogues in the film.
The rest of the cast, Vijay Raaz, Namit Das, Abhishek Duhan and Saanand Verma were are in their top form.
And the dialogues are amazing. They create a punch and are perfectly timed.
The entire film is not just fresh was extremely realistic. The sisters become mothers through the course of the film and the actors actually looked bulky, like how a real woman would look. Generally, in films like this that show a different setting and also involve using a different dialect, the filmmakers go over the top, as do the actors. This is probably one of those films that never falls off the line and keeps you hooked throughout.
Complementing the story and the powerful performance are the background music, the editing, and even the cinematography.
This is a film that will delight you in every possible way. In fact, Vishal Bharadwaj very tactfully puts a lot of political statements in the most subtle way possible. This story of sibling rivalry made me wish I had a sibling! Entertaining and fresh, you should most definitely not give this one a miss.
