Chennai-based director Manoj Annadurai has made his directorial debut with the film Get Happy, which is an independent English film. The director recently spoke about his experience shooting in New York and said, “Right from the beginning, I didn't want to make my film in Tamil. I had seen my friends make their films and then struggle to get them released here because independent films hardly have any takers here”.

He added, “Also, I will have to bank only on the theatrical release to get my investment back, which is almost impossible. But when I make a film in English, I have avenues like 'Video on Demand' to reach out to the audience and at the same time, make money from the film”. The director completed a four-week course at the New York Film Academy and directed Get Happy.

The director also revealed, “New York is considered to be a haven for independent filmmakers. Everyone from the actors to the people working in various departments understand the budget involved in making indie films and so, they are not very particular about their salaries”. Get Happy was given the title of Best Comedy film at the Manhattan Film Festival and was also selected for the Montreal Film Festival.
