Supreme Court Stays Non-bailable Arrest Warrants Against Vijayakanth And His Wife

The Tamil star, Vijayakanth, who appeared in more than 150 Tamil flicks, has received a remission from the apex court. On July 28, Thursday, the Supreme Court stayed the non-bailable arrest warrants against Vijayakanth and his wife Premalatha. These warrants were issued against them by a trial court at Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, following their absence before it in a defamation case, in March.

Allegedly, on behalf of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, a public prosecutor, K. N. Subramaniam, reported the cases. He filed a list of defamatory cases against Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) Chief and actor-politician Vijayakanth and his wife Premalatha. A bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra and R. F. Nariman said, “Anyone calling a government corrupt or unfit cannot be slapped with defamation case.”

A report suggested that the couple had delivered derogatory remarks against Jayalalithaa at a public gathering in Palladam, on November 6, 2015. The Supreme Court said, “There has to be tolerance to criticism…defamation cases cannot be used as a political counter weapon. Cases for criticizing the government or bureaucrats create a chilling effect.” Presently, Vijayakanth is drawn in a Tamil action film, ‘Thamizhan Endru Sol’, which is scheduled to hit the big screen this year.
