Recently, there were rumours that Vijay 59 might be inspired by the storyline of 1990 crime-drama film Sathriyan. But, Atlee, the director of the project, rubbished the rumours. He told dna, “No. It’s a rumour that Vijay 59 is based on Vijayakanth’s Sathriyan”.

Earlier, one of the sources close to the unit said, “Yes, the story is inspired by Sathriyan. Vijay will be seen as a cop in the film. Just like how Atlee's earlier film Raja Rani was inspired by Mouna Ragam, this is inspired by Sathriyan, which was a massive hit. However Atlee will give his own touches to the film”.

Sathriyan was a super hit film, directed by K. Subash and produced by Mani Ratnam. Vijayakanth played the role of cop and Thilakan played a corrupt politician. The Atlee directorial will feature J. Mahendran as the main antagonist. The source also said, “Unlike the usual villains, he will be seen as a mastermind who is constantly upping his game”. The crime film drama is expected to release on Pongal 2016.
