When Jayaram Got Dewy-eyed About His Young Days Of Celebrating Vishu And Tamil New Year

Jayaram is one of the most versatile actors of southern film industry. Even after doing countless films down south, he is still the most superlative actor. The actor is currently full of joys of spring. Why not?  He has many reasons to be. Since he has his roots both in Tamil Nadu as well as in Kerala, therefore he will get to celebrate Tamil New Year and Vishu. The second reason for him to be on the cloud nine is that he has completed 30 years in the southern film industry.

As the actor celebrates the Tamil and Malayalam New Year with his close-knit family of four — his wife and veteran actress Parvathy and children Kalidas and Malavika, he gets tear-jerking about thinking of his childhood days. When quizzed about Vishu, he replied, “It’s a special festival for me — I would meet my grandparents and cousins and used to have a gala time.” Getting nostalgic about his childhood, the Panchathanthiram actor says, “Vishu kai neetam is a gift of sorts from our grandparents wishing us prosperity, good health and happiness for the next year. Also, we offer vegetables, fruits and rice to Lord Krishna and get blessings from him. My grandparents would give me coins of 50 paise and `1, and at the end of the day, I would have collected `25 to `50 from the elders in the family! For two months, I would use this money to watch movies and take part in thiruvizha and circus!”

He further recalls how he used to cultivate vegetables and fruits on his own in Kerala and then offering them to Lord. Since the custom of festivals involves giving gift to children, therefore the actor gets reminiscent about how he used to get one rupee during his young days when it had so much value. But he is happy that instead of just buying vegetables and fruits, people nowadays have started growing themselves.
