A slick spy film peppered with the right dose of action and comedy the film was a perfect popcorn watch but also was really intelligent and rich in its treatment. Audience was almost certain that this would be the film that would win Leonardo Di Caprio is much coveted Oscar. Even though that did not happen, audiences enjoyed the story of Jordan Belfort, perhaps, more than any other film that year. The film is surely a masterpiece and given the fan following it enjoys among audiences it could have taken the Oscar home if the Popular Film category was announced earlier.
Although Oscars do not really consider superhero films, but The Avengers could have surely started the trend. One DC universe best film, without a doubt was appreciated across the world and even collected a massive amount at the box-office. There are fans of the film who consider this one of the best superhero film ever made. Even the critics liked the treatment and the stellar performance by the star cast and it was surely the most popular film of the year 2012.
For Harry Potter fans it is perhaps a sacrilege to pick one favorite film but gun to the head if a Harry Potter fan is asked to pick out one favorite, there is a good chance that many of them will pick this film over any other Harry Potter film. Directed by David Yates, this film was the penultimate film in the wildly popular Harry Potter series and thus has a special emotional appeal for the massive Harry Potter fandom.
Directed by the supremely talented David Fincher this movie is surely a masterclass in filmmaking. From story to direction to performances the film is gripping to the extent of being almost flawless. Even though it was not strictly mainstream but it managed to entertain audience with nothing but excellent content and superb acting by the star cast and would have surely won the golden lady in the Best Popular Film category. To be honest it is perhaps one of the most deserving film on the list.
Directed by the maestro himself, Steven Spielberg’s magnum opus Avatar missed the Oscars by a narrow margin even after being nominated in the Best Picture category. The film upon its release became almost a global phenomenon and is probably one the best films in the history of motion pictures in terms of a visual treat. However, even though the film was mostly in talks for its VFX it could also boast of a gripping storyline. With all elements in place it would have surely won the missed Oscar if the Popular film category existed back in 2009.
This film directed by Christopher Nolan deserved a special mention simply for re-inventing the superhero genre in films. The film enjoys a cult following that only few films can claim and fans,even to this day, swear by the film. Apart from giving Hollywood one of its best antagonist ever in Joker, a role that Heath Ledger made immortal, was simply so much more than your usual superhero films. If there is one film that deserved the Oscar in the Best Popular Film category more than any other film, it is perhaps, The Dark Knight.
