Baahubali: Before The Beginning: The ambitious prequel by Netflix scrapped after Rs. 150 crores of investment

The web series Baahubali: Before the Beginning after facing several roadblocks seems to now have been shelved. The project which was all set to be a prequel to S.S. Rajamouli ’s Bahubali and Bahubali 2 and tell the tale of the fearless Shivagami was being backed by Netflix .

The project was announced by S.S. Rajamouli himself in 2017 based on the book The Rise of Sivagami written by Anand Neelakantan. After inking a deal with Netflix the project was green lit as Baahubali: Before the Beginning in August 2018 with Deva Katta as director. Actress Mrunal Thakur was to play Shivagami in the series, the character was essayed by actress Ramya Krishna on-screen. Rajamouli was backing the series as a producer.

Things took a turn in March 2021, as the streaming giant reportedly scrapped all the work that was shot till date and things took off from the scratch again as right from the production to the cast everything changed. Mrunal quit the show and was replaced by Waqima Gabbi. While Deva Katta was replaced as creator by Kunal Deshmukh and Ribhu Dasgupta.

The revamped project failed to take off eventually and now after an investment of close to Rs. 150 crores the project is said to have finally been scrapped for good according to reports. Rs. 100 crores were apparently shelled out on the first version of Baahubali: Before the Beginning and in the second attempt additional costs were incurred as a whole new production team took over.

The ambitious web-series didn’t work out owing to the differences in vision between was happening on ground and how Netflix had imagined it.

Baahubali: Before The Beginning was to have two seasons.
