Lara Dutta reveals how she reacted when her daughter asked what a brothel was?

Lara Dutta who headlines the recently released series Hiccups and Hookups on Lionsgate Play has said that in India it is perceived that women don’t have sex. The Housefull actress said that even though she has been a part of Bollywood films where sex is addressed from a male perspective she doesn’t understand who all the men of the country are having sex with.

“I don’t know who the men are having sex with. It’s never discussed, people don’t want to talk about it. It’s like, ‘It’s okay if you’re having… But we don’t want to know about it. Keep your sexuality under wraps,’” she told Siddharth Kannan in an interview.

The actress plays a mother in the Lionsgate Play web series and addressing subjects which are not conventionally spoken about. The actress was happy to have played a protagonist in her 40’s which was close to her real age.

Talking about her personal life Lara revealed she was concerned about how her daughter would react to seeing her in a role such as this one, “I’ve never done anything without discussing it with Mahesh before. I think we’re a progressive family… Normally we talk to our friends about such things, we don’t talk to our family. I remember, sex education in school touched the periphery, but that’s about it. Your parents never spoke to you about it. When my daughter was four years old, she wanted to know about divorce. Nine years old, she asked me, ‘What is a brothel?’ I don’t know where she is hearing these things, but she is exposed to them. It’s concepts she doesn’t understand, and it is my responsibility to explain it to her.”

The actress further spoke about not wanting to lie to her daughter and ensuring that such conversations are not considered taboo by her.
