Minnal Murail director Basil Joseph bags best director prize at this year's Asian Academy Creative Awards

Basil Joseph is the third Indian director to win the award after Anurag Kashyap for Sacred Games in 2018 and Richie Mehta for Delhi Crime in 2019.

The Asian Academy Creative Awards which started in 2018 and is held every year during the annual Media Festival in Singapore recognizes work from over 16 countries.

During his speech Basil Joepsh thanked the Asian Academy for recognizing Minnal Mutail and his work, he also went on to state that it was a team effort 

“There have been tons of superhero stories in the past and creating one with a new story and vision was challenging to say the least. The Asian Academy Creative Awards recognizing my work and praising it has showcased my success in doing so,”

Minnal Murail is the first superhero movie from the Malayalam movie industry and stared Tovino Thomas in the lead as a young tailor named Jaison who gets superpowers after begin struck by lighting.

The movie was released on Netflix on December 16, 2021, and was well received by fans and critics alike, the movie and on Netflix, it is the third non-English movie from India to reach its global top ten list.

Minnal Murali was on the global top ten list for four connectives months after its release and reached the top ten list in 30 countries. The movie was produced by Sophia Paul and was initially going to a theatrical release but switched to Netflix due to the pandemic.

Basil Joseph took to Instagram to express his gratitude for his award and that he felt honored to represent the Malayalam movie industry and India.

Hollywood stunt choreographer Vlad Rimburg who is known for his work on shows like The Gangs of London, and Lucifer, and Bollywood movies like Sultan and Brothers was in charge of the action sequences for the movie.

The cast of the movie includes Tovino Thomas, Guru Somasundaram, Aju Varghese, Femina George, Shelly Kishore, Harisree Ashokan, Jude Anthany Joseph, and Mamukkoya.

Minnal Murali is currently streaming on Netflix.
