“Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam is a film about films told in the most unique manner. The movie manages to be different yet strikes a chord with the audience. Parthiben's imaginative direction makes it a must watch.”
As a tribute to 100 years of Indian cinema, Radhakrishnan Parthiepan has made a film that is worth watching. A character in the film says "Film can be made without dialogues, but a film cannot be made without a screenplay and a director". An audience member (who isn't nowadays?) asks the to-be director if films are watched by the team before releasing, an enthusiastic associate director says they would have watched the film 100 times before releasing, the audience member mockingly asks him "Then why are films so bad?"
Jigarthanda which was released two weeks ago, a film about a gangster in Madurai, actually a crime comedy, too, had a storyline that had filmmaking as its central objective. Filmmaking is an art, not everybody is made for it, and not everybody with money or power can enter the art world. We have heard that luck is also needed, very much, for people to survive in the film industry in addition to talent. While talent can be spotted pretty quickly, luck is an invisible fruit that might or might not fall on your head (Newton certainly found his).
Tamizh (Santhosh Prathap), the director in the film, is holding the ladder as of now, he needs to start climbing soon. His expressions are limited, calling it a handful, would be an exaggeration. Akhila Kishore does a good job. Thambi Ramaiah is currently a tissue in Tamil Cinema, handy, neat and gives us a few laughs, when other things fail, we still hold on to him.
There are no unnecessary songs, no unwanted actions or deviations. Parthiepan's presence in the film stresses the importance of a director. Actors' guest appearances, ah they are what you might say, Directorial Touch. Parthiepan's touch exclusively.
Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam is yet another film that yells about the difficulties in the film industry. The differing angles the producer and the director look at, emotional upheavals - a director and the people working in the film industry have to live with, etc. Writing a screenplay is one big task, the bigger task is a producer backing the script; this is where many give up.
Radhakrishnan Parthiepan makes a film without a story and what we get is a film with a definitive climax.
P.S. Life can run on intuition but a film runs on imagination.
