Moodar Koodam is undoubtedly a cut above the run of the mill type of Tamil films that come week after week. This is probably one Tamil film that I have watched in a long time that doesn't feature a heroine. Coming to the film, which goes by the tagline 'Fool's Gathering', is a close companion to recent Tamil dark comedy Soodhu Kavvum. Although it's not as good as SK, but it definitely rises up to a level where you notice spurts of its potential.

Heavily inspired by Guy Ritchie films and his style of filmmaking, Moodar Koodam is about four unemployed wastrels brought together through different circumstances. Living a life of uncertainty and not knowing how to earn the next meal of the day, they decide to turn robbers. What happens when they take a family hostage in a bid to mint some money? The events that unfold form the rest of the story.

Needless to say, Moodar Koodam is like a meal fresh out of oven. It doesn't stink of staleness, is tasty and easily digestible. However, the time it takes for the meal to cook is a wait little too long. You wish the dish was served quicker.

Here is another Tamil film bereft of all the common cliches. In fact, it even makes fun of cliches by cracking a joke on itself at regular intervals. But, never does it fail to entertain, from start to finish, it's a laugh riot.

The humour in the film is very sharply written. Unlike several Tamil films that depend on Santhanam, Moodar Koodam relies on situational comedy pulled off with ease by every character in the film. Be it one the four wastrels or the lone thief who accidentally gets involved in the hostage situation.

The backstory of each character is intelligently narrated through songs, giving audiences the typical treatment of Tamil cinema. But, the presence of too many back stories, there's one even for a dog and a doll, is partly irritating and time consuming. This is precisely where you feel that a really good film until then turns senseless.

The lead performances work in the favour of the film, while good support is given by Jayaprakash and Anupama Kumar. The lead four characters complement each other very well. There are too many funny characters in the film and that's a plus. It is commendable that the film even with an unknown lead cast manages to entertain throughout. From this we can infer that audiences are not keen on hero-worshipping anymore.

Moodar Koodam is definitely one of the better Tamil films of this year and it deserves to be watched even though it tests your patience towards the end.
