After the super hit Pandiyanadu, Vishal - Suseenthiran combo is back with payum puli. Vishal is always a good choice for cop roles because he is fit and looks believable as a cop. The trailer looked interesting and I expected one roller coaster of a movie but since Tamil cinema is plagued by commercial elements like love, songs, heroine etc so the main story always takes a back seat. Payum Puli too suffered in this aspect. Read on!

Payum Puli is about a undercover cop, who is on a mission to find and kill the culprit who murdered a policeman. But later he learns that the main mastermind behind all these murders and kidnaps is still out there and he takes up this case officially to nab the gangster. His finds the culprit and there is a surprise in store for him. What's that and what happened after that is the rest of the story. In between there is some maane theney ponmaaney stuff with the heroine, which never makes sense to me.

Suseenthiran had a solid script but the screenplay, especially in the first half was pathetic. There are unwanted songs thrown in, couple of encounters and a dummy heroine. Only after the interval, the movie starts to get a bit racy. More action in the 1st half would have made this film more gripping. Editing was sharp and tight. Except for the 1st half, the film didn't seem to be dragging. There are some WTH scenes. For example, an encounter is followed by a duet song. WTH WTH WTH.

Cinematography was good especially I loved the drone shots and the fight sequences. Music by Imman was pretty good with pretty ok songs. Performances wise, Vishal did his best and looked good as a cop. But Samuthirakani will take away all the medals for his awesome acting. He is a class apart. The variations he showed were brilliant. Soori played a typical sidekick to Vishal. Kajal Agarwal made a guest appearance as a heroine quite a few times in the movie. She had no prominent role as always.

There are few things I liked in the movie. The honesty and genuineness in which Suseenthiran dealt with the subject. 2nd half is where all the action happens and there is this brutality factor which makes it more original. There is a small investigation scene and that was well scripted. The movie has a bit of family and emotional angle too, which was handled with ease. There are no heavy punch dialogues and goons flying everywhere. The action sequences were believable and packed a punch. Payum Puli is a decent cop thriller, except for the commercial sacrifices made in the 1st half.
