You will only watch a Bala movie when you exactly know what you are going to see. Bala is always known for his message oriented films, which emotionally connects and makes you think. As far as Thaarai Thappatai is concerned, it had everything, except a solid story or a message. The film is gripping because it does not bore you and its touching at times due to the emotional scenes. But where is the story? Where is the message?

The movie starts off nicely. It shows the lives of the members of a Karagattam troupe. It begins with an energetic song and Sasi Kumar - Varu pair literally rock the screen. After that it wanders aimlessly here and there. The troupe moves to Andaman and after they return, Sasi - Varu love breaks up and she gets married to a rouge. Once, she leaves the troupe, business gets dull. Later, the hero finds out that Varu is in wrong hands and he goes to rescue her. But as we are used to tragic climax in all Bala movies, we can expect the same in this movie too.

I liked Bala's screenplay if you try to look at it without thinking about its story. Its gripping and not boring. But when you think about the story, there isn't one. There is no solid story or a message. The movie does not follow a character or a group of characters. It just wanders. Thats where I was disappointed with Bala this time. This could even end up as Bala's low in his career. However, he had extracted best performances from each and every person.

This is an amazing 1000th film for the legend Ilaiyaraaja. The songs and RR was absolutely superb. There is energy in every frame. Cinematography was decent and editing was perfect. Sasi Kumar and Varu gave their career best performances, though she might have overacted a bit but she was spot on 90% of the time. Newbie baddie RK Suresh was perfect and looked ruthless as a blood thirsty animal. You cant find any glitches in the acting department. Perfect.

Overall, you might be a little disappointed with this film for the lack of solid story. The 1st half was fun and energetic. After the interval, the film gets more gory and there is blood all over. And there is a sad climax as always. I just wish Bala tries to explore positive side of life and positive human emotions too. He is getting all too predictive and disappointing at the same time.
