Dhanush’s 25th film Velaiyilla Pattathari is a gift to himself. He produces and stars in a film where every scene has him. Probably, that’s exactly what the audience expects of him.
VIP is dedicated to all the engineers and jobless graduates – a fitting dedication. In a particular scene Dhanush explains the struggle of a student from a middle-class background drawing innumerous whistles. Throughout the film he does that. There are sharp dialogues along with punch dialogues (deemed necessary for an actor like Dhanush). I was looking for Amala Paul behind the screens too; and finally found her. She’s there in bits and pieces, let’s call it an extended cameo. Saranya and Samuthirakani are quite nice. They do bring our parents to our eyes. Vivek in a cameo has a few lines that will make the audience laugh. His accomplice Cell Murugan too is present. You see Dhanush and everybody else but you see Dhanush.
VIP is about not letting go of certain dreams. No compromising. But when the underdog is cornered, he fights like a trained stray dog. Anirudh’s music is good for the ears although the picturisation is bland. Songs pop up just when you expect them to. “What a Karavad” is a tribute to the style of “Why this Kolaveri di”. While “Kolaveri” became an international hit, Karvad will have to make do with becoming a local hit. All said and done, “Karvad” is a better song than “Kolaveri”. Anirudh and Dhanush give their voices to most of the songs, a little help from S. Janaki adds to the “Amma Amma” song – mother sentiment. Many films run solely on this sentiment. Fortunately, in VIP, it is not rubbed on our shoulders excessively.
Velraj is the writer, cinematographer and director, the reason for the feather in the cap of Dhanush’s. Is he walking the Balu Mahendra path? Can he successfully do it? Is Velraj’s directorial debut going to be a Kokila for his career? Balu Mahendra’s path was the midway, between commercial and parallel cinema, Velraj’s work though heavily toward commercial cinema, is a director we can expect some good films from.
It has the clap-moments plus whistle-moments to become a hit at the box office. You know, the story of an underdog rising to the top, never fails. Dhanush’s exuberance and Anirudh’s songs – you can carry them back home.
