Samuthirakani's latest outing Appa is a never-ending series of sermons on education and upbringing masqueraded as a socially conscious feature film. The film revolves around three different paternal heads and their three sons, who have different personality traits.

Samuthirakani's earnest intentions are marred by a below par writing which is made horrible by over the top characters and performances. It is surprising that despite some seasoned actors including Namo Narayanan and Thambi Ramaiah on board, it is the kids who shines in the film. Kakka Muttai Vignesh and Nasath impress with their performances while Yuvashri of Amma Kanakku fame justifies her selection.

Overall, Appa is a boring, monotonous 'message' film which would have a lot better if it was made as a Docu-drama. Samuthirakani bites more than he could chew and it's quite evident in his storytelling approach.
