Vetri Maaran's Visaranai, a fictionalized depiction of a real case, is a chilling exploration of police brutality that sidesteps all the cliches of the sub-genre. Four blue-collar Tamil-speaking men, picked up at random by the cops in Andhra Pradesh, are booked in a false charge of robbing a wealthy and influential big shot and are tortured to extreme degrees so that they confess. Visaranai isn't torture porn, though. It keeps subverting the viewer's expectations, and constantly pushes its narrative in new directions. The result is not only a consistently gripping film, but a thoughtful and humane enquiry into the minds of the characters, both those who belong to the system and those who become the victims of it.
