Verdict - Yaamirukka Bayamey is one of the best horror-comedies in Tamil filmdom.

Horror comedies are a rarity in Tamil cinema and if you set a film like Kanchana as benchmark for this genre, debutant Deekay's 'Yaamirukka Bayamey' is definitely a cut above it. The ghost in this film looks far better than the one in the former. I know that's not an appealing factor to take into a consideration to watch a film, but I'm just trying to highlight some major screw ups in Indian horror films. But, here's a film that treats this genre with some seriousness and also realizes in the process that it can't treat it too seriously, and therefore, ensures we are entertained at regular intervals.

Kiran, a television marketer, lands in trouble when one of his products has adverse effects on his customer, thus ending his marital life. The customer is the son of a local don, who gives Kiran an ultimatum of finding a suitable girl for his son within a week. It's exactly when Kiran receives a letter of inheritance from his father, who has left behind a mansion for him. Kiran flees town with his girlfriend and starts life afresh in the mansion, with a manager and his sister. But things take a detour when Kiran and his gang are haunted by a spirit of a dead woman, who once owned the mansion and has had a history of killing all the previous owners of the property.

There's nothing fascinating about the story and even the flashback of the dead woman doesn't pique your interest in the film. However, the events that are weaved as part of the story keep you hooked with horror and comedy becoming important elements of entertainment. While most of the horror moments are cliched, but the humour that's extracted out of them is outright hilarious. These moments are aptly brought to life by the performances of the lead cast.

Deekay knows the pulse of the audience well and gives them exactly what they want. With horror and comedy, he uses Oviya to tease with some sleaziness. I know it's completely unnecessary but it works well with the masses as it satisfies them in a different place while they are laughing on the outside. There are songs too, included in the narrative for the same purpose as above.

With all these elements intact, you don't get an excellent product but one that definitely supersedes other films in the same genre. Therefore, I think Yaamirukka Bayamey is one of the best horror-comedies in Tamil filmdom.
