Dr. Rajasekhar picks a wonderful movie, already a cult hit of sorts in Tamil, Soodhu Kavvum, for a comeback of sorts, after an acting hiatus. He produces the movie under the banner of Sivani and Sivathmika, his daughters. But, one must say Santhosh Peter Jayakumar does Soodhu Kavvum a lot of injustice. It is a scene-to-scene remake and one wonders how tough that could be! Well, that is where the original brilliance of Soodhu Kavvum haunts you. Bobby Simha, for example, or Karunakaran or Vijay Sethupathy himself set the standards so high, that you almost end up missing them, by the end of the first few minutes.
For those who haven't watched the Tamil original, Gaddam Gang is about Gaddam Das, a wannabe kidnapper who sets himself some rules for successful, low profile kidnapping. He befriends a group of three youngsters who help him out. Eventually, they come across an offer they cannot resist, the job of kidnapping the naughty and bespoiled, but extremely street smart young son of an idealistic minister. On their back is a sadistic encounter specialist chasing them. From then on, the movie has several twists and turns.
The strength of the movie is the script and the quirks and mannerisms that make the script extremely entertaining and enjoyable. Those quirks are missing in this Telugu remake and so is the whole feeling that indulges you. Where Gaddam Gang fails is in drawing you into the story and that happens because of the inability of the characters with the exception of Satyam Rajesh to absorb the nuances and depict them on screen. While Demil's cinematography is reasonably good, Atchu's music is a big letdown. Considering how big a plus point the OST of Soodhu Kavvum was, you understand how the script isn't getting the right highs due to a poor background score. All in all, it is a movie that you had rather pass and watch the original instead, if you still haven't.
