There's a 2011 film Ala Modalaindi. Remember! The film brought director Nandini Reddy under the spotlight. Cool. The film also made stars out of Nani and Nitya Menon. Kalyana Vaibhogame is kind of a thematic sequel to the same with many characters from the former walking into the milieu. We see Mirchi Hemanth, Ashish Vidyarthi getting here bringing home the same aura. Now the lead pair of Naga Shourya and Malavika Nair perfectly fills the shoes of their predecessors. This makes the film delectable and predictable; but altogether refreshing, as it brings out a slice from everybody's life.

Shourya (Naga Shourya) is a game designer and has high ambitions of cracking a big deal that takes him to the USA. Divya (Malavika Nair) is a medico and wants to pursue higher studies at John Hopkins. They echo each other and have one thing in common - live life to the fullest and don't want to get into any relationships. No, it's not that predictable. They don't meet accidentally in the US or somewhere. Their parents fix their marriage and they want to break it to attain their freedom. The rest of the film is all about how they achieve that.

Kalyana Vaibhogame is an assortment of simple yet quirky characters, candid moments and comic potions. A father who sends FB friend requests to his son's friends, a mother who is a drama queen and forces her recipes on the family, a father who is stoic to the likes and dislikes of others in the family, a mother who feels to sacrifice her dreams to take good care of the family, a son who can add humor to any dull moment and a daughter who's effervescent and emotional rolled into one. The other characters are bunch of friends and all the funny prospective brides and grooms who appear like a flash.

Most of the scenarios in the film appear straight out of your living room. The funny conversations with your friends and family can be seen here. How the characters shift gears from humor in one scene to emotion in other scene is laudable. That being said, the director plays it safe without allowing the melodrama to seep in. But, what she could have corrected is the predictability factor. The twists in the tale are visible all over right from the word go. Like a typical Telugu film, there's a second heroine who scales up the jealous factor of the heroine. And towards the climax the inevitable union happens.

Naga Shourya is a natural charmer and the way he renders all his lines is a treat to watch, esp. the scene where he puts up an act before the girl's parents. Malavika speaks and emotes through her eyes, and brings out the dualities in her character quite well. Kalyan Koduri complements the film with his lilting tunes. The story looks dated with many films already entering this space but the director pulled it off so well with loads of humor and other essential elements that leave no scope for boredom. The dialogues are peppy and few are laced with philosophy that surfaces the importance of marriage in this 'hatke' take on relationships.
