Sampoornesh Babu made waves through Hrudaya Kaleyam, poking fun at almost every star in the industry and every hit. He has the right look and diction too poke fun as well and with the right creative license he could have gone some distance at carving a niche as parody hero in Tollywood. However, Singham 123 whose screenplay was penned by Manchu Vishnu is not the ideal vehicle for him. While the movie in itself is about a burning cop and his desire to quell the illegal activities of the antagonist Lingam in a far-off place called Singarayakonda, a parody is not so much about the story as it is about the fun. In such a scenario there is huge responsibility on the dialogue writer (Ratnam) and the screenplay writer. With director Ajay Sharma confused between turning the movie into a parody or a serious mainstream flick, the offering falls flat on its face.
There are many reasons why you have to analyse the movie. For example, while the romantic side-angle is funny, it is not consistent with that of a parody. You almost see the director taking the love story seriously. It is a parody and if it has to be judged as a parody you have to stick to it at all costs, even when there are songs and romance. Similarly, the pace of the movie is slow and when that happens only witty one-liners and good comical sub-plots can save the day. No such thing happens in Singham 123 even as you see spoof lines on many well known but now redundant movie scenes and dialogues. In other words, the makers are not updated yet when it comes to spoofing, missing the golden rule of staying as current as possible.
Singham 123 offers entertainment to true Sampu fans, no doubt, who'll laugh almost at anything. Yet, for non-Sampu fans who are well-versed with parodies, this movie doesn't really do justice and hence can be safely avoided.
