Hawkeye first impression: Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld series shows a lot of promise
Check our our first impression of Hawkeye
The latest series from Marvel, Hawkeye dropped the first two episodes this week. The series is set after the events of Avengers End Game and is part of the fourth phase of the MCU, it follows a young Kate Bishop played by Hailee Steinfeld who dreams of being like her hero Hawkeye and through a series of events the two of them end up teaming up together to uncover a criminal conspiracy.
With only two episodes out right now it's hard to judge the series, however, the show does seem to have a lot of potential. As with Marvel's other TV series, this one has a great production value and is technically very sound. This show is also the most grounded among Marvel's latest offerings and this does make the show refreshing to watch. The chemistry between Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld is what holds the show together. Jeremy as the reluctant mentor is fun to watch, and a change of pace from Hawkeye's usual persona.
The first episode is the weaker of the two and has pacing issues and only really picks up towards the end, the family dynamic between Kate and her mother could also be annoying at times as it's been done to death in every coming of age movie or show and really doesn't leave you with the right impression. However, the parts that dealt with Cliff and his guilt over the events of Endgame are handled well and with subtlety.
The second episode picks up the pace is handled much better. Though it is obvious who the main bad guy is as it's very on the nose this could be on purpose as well. It's too early to tell, so the show is definitely worth watching though if you want to watch the whole thing in one go I recommend waiting a few weeks. Like with the previous shows, Marvel has clearly put in a lot of care and effort and it is obvious watching Hawkeye if you are a fan of the MCU you don't need me to tell you to watch it and if you are not a fan of the superhero movies and shows and the CGI fights this might be the show that you could enjoy.
