After RRR, Gangubai Kathiwadi becomes Alia Bhatt's second film to join the Oscars 2023 race to be entered for all major categories

The upcoming 95th Academy Awards are going to be big for the Indian film industry. After S.S. Rajamouli’s RRR, a second of actress Alia Bhatt is all set to be submitted for Oscars. Already chasing BAFTA nominations in all major categories, Sanjay Leela Bhansali reportedly plans to enter the Oscars race with Gangubai Kathiawadi .
According to latest reports, Sanjay Leela Bhansali who is presently leading the BAFTA campaign for Gangubai Kathiawadi in London will be submitting the film for all major categories for Oscars 2023 including Best Director, Best Actress, Best Picture, Best Screenplay among others.
Gangubai Kathiawadi which has been one of the few Indian films to have performed well at the box office this year, also received acclaim in international circuits and will be the third Indian project after India’s official entry Chhello Show and RRR to be submitted for review to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
While filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli began his Oscars campaign for RRR months ago and has been touring various cities in the United States for promotions, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is presently busy with his BAFTA campaign for his film based on the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai.
Banshali delivered a BAFTA Masterclass in London and even spoke at a special convention at the University of Arts London, last week.
Gangubai Kathiawadi debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2022, weeks ahead of its theatrical release worldwide. The movie grossed over Rs. 100 crores at the Indian box office.
Before Gangubai Kathiawadi and RRR, Alia Bhatt’s film Gully Boy was submitted as India’s official entry for the 92nd Academy Awards in 2019 but failed to make the cut into the Best International Feature category.
Hopes are high form RRR to earn an Oscar nomination if not a few and S.S. Rajamouli’s recent Best Director win at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards has solidified hope that the filmmaker might even bring a trophy home.
