Cannes 2013: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sherlyn Chopra’s fashion statements and much more on Indian cinema

Just a day after we were awestruck with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s outfits at Cannes 2013, she made a blunder with another Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla’s designed dress on the red carpet. She almost reminded of last year’s most hated chikankari sari and embroidered jacket with this year’s full-sleeved, intricately embroidered anarkali which she wore during Blood Ties premiere.

Another fashion gaffe was made by Sherlyn Chopra as she preferred a transparent black dress, it seemed at least, on the red carpet while promoting her debut film Kamasutra 3D. Thanks to the heavy Rajasthan-inspired neckpiece which could at least cover up and take away the eyes from her most exceptional black outfit. She posed in the dress before the screening of the movie The Blind Detective. In competition with Aishwarya, Vidya Balan was destined to lose the race and she almost left unnoticed in a red sari, a red long-sleeved blouse, white beads, a white bag and her no make-up look during the screening of Un Chateau en Italie.

On the other hand, Indian films have been continuing to garner praises from the likes of The Hollywood Reporter, Variety and others. Films like Dabba, Bombay Talkies, Monsoon Shootout and Ugly have proved that Indian cinema is much more than mere song-and-dance-sequences. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Tannishtha Chatterjee starrer Monsoon Shootout was described by THR as “a colourful Indian cops and gangsters tale that gets a successful makeover as an international art film.” Ritesh Batra's debut film Dabba or The Lunchbox starring Irrfan Khan and Siddique, also received undisputed praise from the critics. As reviewed by Variety, Dabba is 'an indie Indian film with the crossover appeal of Monsoon Wedding.' It also added, "Ritesh Batra's debut is sure to be gobbled up by audience-friendly fests before heading into niche cinemas.”
