Files pertaining to Salman Khan hit-and-run case burnt in 2012 accident

A Right to Information query filed by Mansoor Darvesh recently revealed that the files that had records of Salman Khan’s hit-and-run case were burnt in the devastating Mantralaya blaze, which took place on June 21, 2012. Now, the home and law & judiciary departments of Maharashtra government have no records of the case. Mansoor Darvesh was presented with incomplete information. “Interestingly, the state officials had promised to reconstruct all the destroyed files, but till date it has not managed to do so”, he revealed.

“I had filed the RTI query to the two departments seeking information on the total number of counsels, lawyers, solicitors, legal advisors, public prosecutors, etc. engaged and appointed by the state government to fight the case”, said Darvesh. He had also enquired about total expenses that were incurred by the state from the starting of the case in 2002 till the judgement by the Mumbai sessions court on May 6. However, Darvesh received partial information stating that the files were burnt and “therefore, it cannot be made available”.

He added, “Salman Khan's accident case is one such example. The government is unaware how much expenditure it has incurred during the course of the case”. The only information he got was that the last (current) Public Prosecutor has been paying Rs. 6000 per hearing, since September 2014.
