Here’s What Rick Roy Has To Say For Designing For Vidya Balan In Begum Jaan

Designing for Begum Jaan was a tough row to how for designer Rick Roy. He had only 20 days to design the outfits for the movie’s leading lady, Vidya Balan, keeping in mind the period on which the movie is based. He had to design the outfits looking at the historical facts and the time frame.

However, Rick did not lose hope and came up with his own vision of the strong and brave Begum. He went all around the country to obtain naturally dyed pure cottons and array of custom-made artisanal jewellery pieces with an antique finish. “The research was exciting and challenging. A friend’s grand-mom showed me some jewellery dating back to the pre-Partition era and I re-imagined and recontextualised it to complement the film’s narrative,” said the designer.

The designer further added, “Vidya made me comfortable. She was supportive and I could call her any time to do a trial. The only thing she cared about was the comfort of the fabric because we shot in 46 degrees heat.” Begum Jaan will hit the theatres on April 14, 2017.
