Johnny Depp: ‘I Fully Expected To Be Fired’ From Pirates of the Caribbean
Updated : April 06, 2016 11:02 AM IST After having done four films in Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Johnny Depp has stood out as the clear reason why his character ‘Jack Sparrow’ has become an iconic role in the industry. But Depp has an interesting revelation to make. The Hollywood star, at AFI Festival in LA, reported to US magazine that Disney wasn’t sure about their lead actor and that they had almost fired Depp from the first film in the series.
“They wanted to fire me. I fully expected to be fired, and I got a call from the upper echelon at Disney who were courageous enough to ask me, 'What are you doing?'”, recalled Depp. The main concern of the makers of the flick was Depp’s slurring of words and mumbling on-screen.
“The questions came up, 'Is (the performance) drunk?'. I really expected to be fired, but I wasn't for some reason. They were actually gonna put subtitles under my character. They couldn't understand Captain Jack”, he added. But in the end, everyone agrees that nobody could have portrayed the role with as much depth and intensity as Depp did. Perhaps, that is the reason why he was nominated for the Academy Award for best actor in 2004.
