Pacific Rim fails to impress box-office numbers, owes failure to Despicable Me 2 and Grown Ups 2

Though a lot of hopes were pinned on Guillermo del Toro's latest big-budget project Pacific Rim, it has come out as a sheer disappointment. Pacific Rim has been a complete loser on the face of Despicable Me 2 and Adam Sandler's comedy Grown Ups 2 in its opening weekend in North America.

Opening with a production budget of at least $190 million, a meagre $38.3 million business poses a financial threat to Legendary Pictures. Rolling out in 38 international markets, Pacific Rim could only earn $53 million taking the worldwide total to $91.3 million, though showered with glowing reviews from movie critics. It witnessed a strong response in Asia, Russia and Mexico only. Despicable Me 2 has retained its topper’s spot in its second weekend grossing $44.8 million for a domestic total of $229.2 million.It has been a No. 1 globally toogrossing $55.7 million from 50 markets taking the worldwide total to $472.4 million.

Sony's Grown Ups 2 enjoyed a spectacular opening of $42.5 million in the domestic front and it has proved a winning game for Sandler finally, who has been a failure at the box-office for a long time. Sony’s worldwide president of distribution Rory Bruer said, "We're feeling great. It was a fairly competitive weekend and to gross more than the first film is great. The sequel played everywhere and to the whole family.” At No. 4 was Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy’s comedy The Heat followed by Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger. On the other hand, Fruitvale Station, which is based on the shooting of a young African-American man by BART police in Oakland, grossed $377,285 from seven theaters for a location average of $53,898, which is also the third best of the year so far.
