6 Lesser Known Female Directors Who Have Taken Bollywood By Storm!

Like the rest of the society, our Hindi film industry has also been a hugely male dominated arena. But with changing times, women too are making their presence felt. We have some of the best in the industry who are women. But while so many of them have become famous, there are a few who are still lesser known despite making movies that have made huge impact in the international film circles.

Here’s a list of 6 women directors who are not so famous despite making some of the best movies:

1.  Alankrita Srivastava

Alankrita Srivastav entered Bollywood with Turning 30 starring Gul Panag. Though critics had said that the film was weak, she proved her mettle with Lipstick Under My Burkha that won as many as 11 awards in foreign countries and swept the critics and audience alike! The feisty and young director calls herself a rebel and says that she loves to make movies about women.

2. Leena Yadav

The director rose to fame with Parched but is still an unknown name in the industry. She has debuted with Shabd starring Aishwarya Rai and Sanjay Dutt and then also made Teen Patti. In fact, she has also directed many Hindi shows including Sanjeevani and Goonj.

3. Konkona Sensharma

She has been acclaimed actress who aced every role that she portrayed, But6 many would not know that she made her directorial debut with A Death in the Gunj. The movie was as close to flawless as it could be. In fact, she had also directed a short film called Naamkoron in 2006.

4. Anusha Rizvi

She might be a very lesser known name in the industry but she proved her craft with the critically noted film, ‘Peepli Live’.

5. Shonali Bose

Shonali had been the director of critically acclaimed films like Amu starring Konkona Sensharma and Margarita With a Straw starring Kalki Koechlin. Her journey began in 2005 with Amu and she has also directed Chittagong.

6. Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari

She had been the director a short film What's for Breakfast which won the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2012. She then directed one of the best movies of 2016- Nil Battey Sannata starring Swara Bhaskar! Hopefully she will become more popular with ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’.
