6 Bizarre Bollywood Trends That Should Never Have Existed!
Updated : July 01, 2017 05:48 PM ISTIts no secret that bollywood is a major influencer when it comes to trends in India. From clothes, to hairstyle, to lifestyle choices, Bollywood permeats into every pore of our existense. While some where elegant and gorgeous, some trends have been breathtaking, but for all wrong reasons. Impractical, ridiculous and downright funny, these bollywood trends should have never caught on.
Tere Naam Hair Cut
Somewhere in the mid-2000s, Tere Naam was a major hit at the box office and marked Salman Khan in one of his most unforgetable avatars. But what people would like to forget is the horde of 'Bhai' fans donning the haircut that Salman sported in the film. A pecuiliar spin off on bangs with two locks of hair forming a greasy looking semi-circle on the forehead was flattering no one. Couple that with ill fitted leather jackets, fake turquoise bracelet and of course a bike, it was a recipe to look like a perfectly creepy stalker. However, bhai loyalists thronged the salons and saloons ( there is a difference, trust me!) to pay homage to the style. Well, after sporting that hairstyle if Salman Khan could not land the chick and ended up in an asylum, what were the odds favouring the lesser mortals.
Suits in pop-colours
We love colours and there was a time we loved Govinda as well. He was funny, he was loud, he was garish but he owned it all like a boss, and because of this we have let a lot his mistakes go unnoticed. But orange and green suits...Really? Throwing a dash of colour is fine, but when the male lead of a film start looking like creepy versions of telly tubbies, its probably the time to stop. It was not funny when fans thought it was a good idea to sport the style (or was it!). What followed was a painful ordeal for eyes at weddings and parties. Drunk dulhe ka friend swaying their hips to 'UP wala thumka lagao' in canary yellow suits forms a part of childhood memory for so many of us. Not proud.
Kaanta Laga pants
Shefali Zariwala's claim to fame became quite a scandalous fashion statements for the middle class parents of teens back in early 2000s. Though fashion rebels clamoured for it, bejewelled thongs peeking out of shiny pants were hard to digest for many. Rhinestones of every possible colour dotting every inch of the pant and a dangerous low rise that could cause a wardrobe malfunction at any moment, it was a bad idea.
Conical Bras
Going back a few years, the glamorous era of 70s and 80s have given us a lot of brilliant movies, unfogettable music and elegant fashion statements. However, one trend that we cannot thank the golden era of bollywood for, are the conical bras and blouses. From divas such as Asha Parekh and Nanda, to neighbourhood fashionistas, women embraced this bizzare trend, literally. What's worse, it continued for a very long time. Refer to the questionably unethical close up of Madhuri Dixit's assets in 'Dhak Dhak Karne Laga' to refresh your memory. Enhancing your assets are cool, but making them look like weapons that can poke and pierce you to death, was odd to say the least. As a safety measure from getting groped it may be a good idea, but as a fashion statement...NO.
Mesh T-shirts
See through t-shirts made of mesh like substances that adorned the leading men of 90s was a fashion trend that should have died in its very infancy, but unfortunately that was not the case. It was bad enough we had to tolerate Akshay Kumar gyrating to popular numbers with his gorilla assets on display, but when neighbourhood Rameshs and Sureshs started going au naturelle in mesh tees with body hair peeking out, it was time to run back to our rooms and not look outside in sheer horror and cringe. An honourable mention in this cateogory would also have to be Sharukh Khan's 'Suraj Hua Madhyam' see through shirt. Simple Logic: Ramesh And Suresh cannot pull off what Baadshah can.
Matchy Matchy fashion
Try wearing red dupatta, red salwar, red kameez, red bindi, red bangles, red earings- looks dumb nad blinding, right? Unfortunately actresses did not get the memo for the longest time about this major fashion faux pas. Its impossible to trace the origin of this trend or blame it one person, but admit it, as a kid you have religiously followed this fashion diktat that everything you are wearing should be of the same shade. Its ok, we grew up in 90s and 2000s and we have all made fashion choices we aren't proud of.
