Money is all that matters at the box office or does it really? The box office trade is too complex to understand for everyone and we sometimes tend to fall for the shining figures that producers throw at us with pride. While a 30 crore earner Sarbjit wasn’t a box office failure, a 60 crore grosser Mohenjo Daro was a disaster on the other hand. Everything in the box trade comes down to the cost in the end and the losses are left to be entailed by poor distributors.
So if an X movie is made on a budget of Rs. 100 and it goes on to earn 150 at the ticket counters, it should be a hit, right? But sometimes the verdict comes across as ‘Flop’. There is a reason for that! The X film made on a budget of Rs. 100 was sold to the distributors for Rs. 200 with the promise that it will yield them profits of at least Rs. 50. While producers laugh their way to the bank, poor distributors are made to suffer the losses.

Talaash
The film did a domestic net business of over Rs. 90 crores back in 2012 and still ended up being an average grosser. The Aamir Khan starrer first disappointed by not entering the 100 crore club, yet the relatively good figures it ended up with were not enough to label it as a ‘hit’.
Ra.One
The film was a rage when it hit the screens in 2011 and straightaway made news for fizzling out. Made on a budget of over 100 crores, the film could only have been a success if it collected more than 150. However, the negative feedback crashed the film down after the opening itself and ended its lifetime tally close to 110 crores. The SRK starrer was an above average grosser at best.
Jai Ho
At a time when Salman Khan movies were thumping victories by making 200 crores and more, Jai Ho came as a surprising outing and could last its box office stay under 120 crores. The heavy cost of the film made the distributors entail some losses and it ended up being an average grosser.
Dilwale
The film isn’t a failure by any means and is one of the most successful films in the overseas. However, despite earning an impressive 149 crores at the domestic box office, Dilwale could never place itself in the big league. Reason? The cost again! With prospects like SRK, Kajol and Rohit Shetty, the distributors had expected a fair return of over 200 crores from the box office. However, the film gave up in competition with Bajirao Mastani and breathed last under 150.
Fan
The only SRK film that can safely be put in the category of box office failure in the last 10 years after Paheli is Fan. The film already made on an extremely expensive budget was further expected to rake in money in the range of 150-175 crores. However, it ran out of breath too soon and put up a tally in the range of 80 crores. A box office failure for SRK in 2015, unbelievable isn’t it?
Tubelight
The latest to join this list is this Salman Khan starrer that misfired bigtime at the box office. While the film did go over the 100 crore mark and collected some 120 odd crores, the huge cost of the film made its distributors entail heavy losses. While Salman's earlier underperformer Jai Ho still managed to do recover its cost to some extent, Tubelight came as a shocker ending up as a flop.
