The Hunger Games vs Divergent
Updated : May 05, 2014 04:13 PM ISTBoth the book trilogies – The Hunger Games and Divergent – have created such loyal fan bases over the years; they could rival Twihards and Potterheads. These novels have sparked global multimillion dollar film series. Since they belong to the same young adult genre, a lot of comparisons have been drawn between them.
Hunger Games loyalists claim the turf since their book was released first leaving Divergent fans to defend their books. It’s time to pick sides in the fight between the ultimate teen dystopia series of this generation. And we’re here to help you! Let the games begin!
The Ultimate futuristic dystopia
Both of them are set in a post war future where a prevalent system makes the rules. They speak of a world where strict boundaries and regulations have been set up in order to maintain peace. Dystopia means a place where everything is unpleasant or bad. It’s a place where the society is dominated by degrading rules made by an oppressive government.
Be it The Hunger Games, where young children are selected to fight it out in an arena for the entertainment of the wealthy.Or Divergent, where people have to fit into a pre-defined category because being different (or divergent) is a crime.
Districts vs Factions
Hunger Games is set in a world called Panem which is divided into 12 districts with one Capitol. Every district is defined by a main occupation. The Divergent world is divided into 5 factions, each represents a virtue: honesty, intelligence, bravery, selflessness, and peace. Neither the districts nor the factions interact amongst each other.

Katniss vs Tris
The films are headed by very similar young girls. Both of whom are rebellious and headstrong teenagers who have been victims of the oppression. Fare warning, you should never get into a “Who is better, Tris or Katniss?” argument with anyone!
Peeta and Gale vs Four
Now for the boys. Four (yes, that’s his name) seems to be the perfect combination of Peeta and Gale. He has Peeta’s sensitivity and Gale’s badass-ness. If Katniss was in Divergent, we’d have another love triangle in our hands!
The Reaping vs Choosing Ceremony
The Reaping is basically when two tributes are picked at random from each Hunger Games district. The people in Divergent are given a “choice”, hence the choosing ceremony. As different as the two events sound, the common point lies in their lack of choice. Everyone HAS to participate!

The Hunger Games vs The Initiation
The crux of The Hunger Games and The Initiation is the survival of the fittest. The children are forced to compete, fight and beat each other in order to live.
Which one would you face, the games or the initiation?

Julianne Moore vs Kate Winslet
Ok, so we’re getting pedantic about the similarities. But bear with us. Both films have picked Oscar winning/nominated actresses to play the antagonist!

Even the logos look so similar! Notice the fire?

Lenny Kravitz vs Zoe Kravitz
Lenny Kravitz was in Hunger Games and his daughter is in Divergent! Yes, we’re this nitpicky!
All in all, both films reflect common themes of romance, rebellion, friendship, courage, loyalty, fear and oppression. They’re about the struggle to gain real freedom.
