15 Bollywood Films You Didn’t Think Would Turn Out So Bad!

We as audiences have always had this knack of predicting the quality of a movie even before it comes out to take the real test. While some movies come with a big advertisement of being brainlessly torturing, some show enough signs of taking you off the hook and end up living up to the promise. Between such categories are a number of films that play with your minds and ultimately make you look stupid.

Those movies show enough promise attributing to the credit and con you into being a well-made cinematic experience. However, it is only after you watch them that you realize you probably got conned in the name of a good director, good actors or mostly dependable writers.

Thugs Of Hindostan (2018)

Promise Made: Apart from being the collaboration of the decade with Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan coming together, this 300 crore Yash Raj film was expected to be the greatest adventure drama.

Reality: With a less than alluring plot line, the film is a tedious watch that not even an Aamir Khan promise could withhold. The film was expected to crosses over 500 crrores business at the box office but that faded away as soon the first reviews came out.

Box Office: 144 crores* (Flop)

Fitoor (2016)

Promises Made: Coming of age filmmaker like Abhishek Kapoor with Kai Po Che and Rock On to his credit, promising blissful romantic drama set in Kashmir with Aditya and Katrina in the fray. Superb music, interesting trailer, excellent cinematography were add-ons.

Reality: With a narrative so convoluted, Fitoor barely touched a right chord. An out of place guest appearance by Ajay Devgn, an overly dramatic Tabu and a non-existing chemistry between the lead pair was what we were treated with.

Box Office: 20-25 crore* (Big Flop)

Shaandaar (2015)

Promises Made: Stalwarts like Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap as producers, someone like a Vikas Bahl who comes with the credit of having previously made Queen as director, promising stars like Alia Bhatt, Shahid Kapoor and wait for it Pankaj Kapoor in the lead and a humongous hype around its quality!

Reality: Most of the viewers who watched this romantic drama/comedy were found coming out of theaters with a headache. The film was a plain bore that just didn’t have a point it wanted to make. A big let-down!

Box Office: 50-55 crores* (Flop)

Bombay Velvet (2015)

Promises Made: Most of the people who put their moneys on this period action drama by Anurag Kashyap were found getting bankrupt. Huge banner, epic star cast, Anurag Kashyap’s first mainstream attempt, huge budget and a much talked about acting debut by Karan Johar.

Reality: While some do not really hate this film to the core for its valiant effort, the truth is the film truly was big dire bore. It almost took forever to come out of its shell and by the time the audiences had given up on the result.

Box Office: 24 crores* (Epic Disaster)

Shamitabh (2015)

Promises Made: R Balki’s much anticipated comeback as a director, a fine script with the likes of Big B and Dhanush at the helm!

Reality: Overly complex and boring!

Box Office: 20 crores* (Flop)

Ghanchakkar (2014)

Promises Made: Absolutely stimulating trailer, Rajkumar Gupta as director who comes having made No One Killed Jessica and Aamir, a rich star cast, a usually dependent Vidya Balan and an equally good support cast.

Reality: Just couldn’t get the interesting idea be executed well. Dull in narrative and simply boring!

Box Office: 27-30 crores* (Below Average)

Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaraa (2013)

Promises Made: Comes from a director who previously helmed the prequel to the very film and also The Dirty Picture. Good music, big budget, expected to be yet another groundbreaking underworld movie and of course Akshay Kumar back in a negative lead!

Reality: Poorly made, badly performed, lackluster writing!

Box Office: 60-64 Crores* (Flop)

Agent Vinod (2012)

Promises Made: Much talked about during its production, a superbly dependent Sriram Raghavan at helm, a stylishly crafted thriller, an intriguing trailer, good music and Saif Ali Khan at his elegant best!

Reality: An out of place long drawn thriller that made you yawn throughout!

Box Office: 44-48 crores* (Flop)

Mausam (2011)

Promises Made: Pankaj Kapoor’s hugely hyped directorial debut, a long wait throughout its making, a never seen before Shahid Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor, promoted as a possible Indian romantic saga and extremely good music.

Reality: So long that it barely looked it was ever going to end, dull and boring, screenplay not making any sense at all!

Box Office: 28-30 crores* (Major Flop)

Kites (2010)

Promises Made: Touted as India’s biggest international film, Hrithik Roshan with Spanish star Barbara Mori, Rakesh Roshan’s production, Anurag Basu (extremely skilled) as a director, huge budget and a big pre-release buzz!

Reality: A painful drag, non-existent romance, a lost plot and an overall bore!

Box Office: 45-50 crores* (Flop)

Delhi 6 (2009)

Promises Made: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra having previously made Rang De Basanti, AR Rahman’s extremely soulful music, a never told before story promised!

Reality: Muddled plot, non-directional narrative, unimpressive lead performances

Box Office: 12-14 crores* (Big Flop)

Yuvvraaj (2008)

Promises Made: Subhash Ghai wearing the director’s hat, big budget, AR Rahman at the musical helm, a rich star cast and a huge pre-release buzz!

Reality: Half-baked plots colliding without any impact, a little out of date and a dragging bore!

Box Office: 7-9 crores* (Big Flop)

Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (2007)

Promises Made: A huge Yashraj release of the year with an ensemble cast, Shaad Ali at helm having given 2 back to back hits, popular music and gave an impression of clicking with the youth!

Reality: Disastrously narrated, non-existing screenplay, miscast with Abhishek and Bobby in the lead and stupidly presented!

Box Office: 12-14 crores* (Disastrous Flop)

Salaam-E-Ishq (2007)

Promises Made: One of India’s biggest ensemble cast put together, Nikhil Advani at helm with Kal Ho Naa Ho to his credit, stars like Salman Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Anil Kapoor, Govinda, John Abraham, Vidya Balan, Priyanka Chopra, Juhi Chawla all together in a musically popular film!

Reality: A never ending tale with barely a story making an impact, too tough a movie to sit through!

Box Office: 10-12 crores* (Colossal Flop)

Saawariya (2007)

Promises Made: One of Bhansali’s most ambitious work to date, overly hyped debut of Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor, courage to take on Om Shanti Om at box office, popular music!

Reality: A narrative screenplay so boring it made audiences come out of theaters midway, a bizarre climax, a film just not apt enough to be viewed by Indian audiences!

Box Office: 19-23 crores* (Flop)

Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005)

Promises Made: One of the biggest anticipated movies to come out of Indian cinema, Aamir Khan’s comeback after 4 long years, a subject promising enough substance!

Reality: A bizarrely handled direction of a subject that needed sensitivity, AR Rahman not clicking as a composer, a boring affair!

Box Office: 10-12 crores* (Average)

All that glitters is not gold they say, all that promises substance isn’t necessarily a good movie we say!

It’s time we stop judging a book by its cover and put an end to being conned by filmmakers presenting a substandard product in a finely packaged deal!
