10 Bollywood Actors Who Proved That You Do Not Need Romance For A Successful Debut
Updated : July 07, 2019 03:17 PM ISTWhenever we think of successful debuts in Bollywood, whether for an actor or an actress, the images that we get are that of an eternal romantic saga peppered with a heavy dose of action, drama, and dance. Basically, debut films act as a CV of sorts to give the directors and producers a sample of the varied skills of the star. Also, given romance is one of the safest bets in Bollywood in terms of box-office success, most actors find it lucrative to have a romantic film as their debut film.
But there are a few brave souls, who decided to break the mold and it paid off. Here are a few actors who proved that you do not need romance to mark a successful debut.
Dangal girls Fatima Sana Shaikha and Sanya Malhotra were catapulted to instant stardom after the roaring success of Dangal. Audiences, critics and even Bollywood itself was amazed to see these two newcomers taking the world of Hindi cinema by storm. Unlike the debuts of most actresses, they did not romance a hero or danced to songs, but went on to debut with one of the biggest hits of Bollywood ever recorded. Now that is some feat to achieve.
After starting out his career as a background dancer and then moving on to TV, Sushant finally got his big break in Bollywood. Where most actors, especially given he was a popular face on TV, would have chosen a role that is heady cocktail of romance and action to display their ‘heroic’ qualities, Sushant stepped into Bollywood with Kai Po Che which was a story of three friends against the backdrop of Gujarat riots and an angle of cricket thrown into the mix. Forget romance, a seasoned dancer, Sushant did not even have a dance number in the film. Kai Po Che went on to perform impressively at the box office despite the niche content and a star with the name of Sushant Singh Rajput was born.
Vivek not only had an unconventional debut but is probably one of the most impressive debuts of Bollywood. He started off his career with the Company directed by Ram Gopal Varma which on to do actually a decent business at the box office. Although he had a romantic angle with Anatara Mali in the film, the focus of the movie was not the love story at all. A gritty and raw crime drama, even the romance between Vivek and Antara was not happy, fluffy and dancing around the tree brand.
This was yet another debut that was not only amazingly matured but also a had a surprisingly decent run at the box office even though the subject and the treatment of the film was very niche. Shreyas debuted with Iqbal directed by Nagesh Kukunoor where he played the role of a deaf and mute boy aspiring to be a cricketer. The only other known name on the cast was probably Naseruddin Shah but Iqbal earned decent money given its genre and Shreyas was instantly noticed for his sharp acting abilities.
A superstar in his own rights in Punjab, where he is mostly known for his roles in popular rom-com, Diljit’s Bollywood debut could not be more unpredictable. He debuted with Abhishek Chaubey’s Udta Punjab and almost instantly became a favorite in Bollywood as well. The dark and hard hitting film based on the backdrop of Punjab’s drug abuse problem did not have the fluffy brand of romance and the subtle romantic angle between Diljit and Kareena in the film definitely not the focus of the film and devoid of any romantic clichés that you would generally associate with debut films.
Pakistani actress Saba Qamar was already popular in India due to her Pakistani serials, but the news of her Bollywood debut got everyone excited. The ethereally gorgeous actress could have chosen any film that would launch her into Bollywood as the next romantic dreamgirl, but instead she chose a film like Hindi Medium to mark her entry into Bollywood. Not only was the film a social drama and totally devoid of Bollywood’s brand of romnance, Saba in her debut film also played a mother, something that even most established actresses are scared of playing on-screen.
He is one of the brightest star in the sky of Bengali regional cinema and a seasoned and gifted actor as well. When the time came for his Bollywood debut, he showed the same sensibilities as he has showed in Bengali cinema and chose to enter Bollywood with a film like Kahaani. The story of Kahaani was unlike anything before and there was hardly any element of romance in Param’s character in the film apart from a subtle hint perhaps. But Kahaani went on to become a super hit and thus Param proved that you don’t have to sing on the peaks of Alps to have a successful debut in Bollywood.
This is another gifted and young actor who got instantly noticed for the splendid job he did in his debut film Mardaani. Playing the cold-blooded and menacing antagonist to Rani’s character in the film, Taher announced that he is here to stay. No romance, no drama, no added fluff, he was noticed due to the sheer brilliance of his acting. The film went on to make some decent profits and gave us an actor of a very high caliber.
Making a debut as an antagonist, especially when you score very high on the hotness scale is actually quite an unconventional move. But Vidyut Jamwal decided to walk the path less traveled and that truly made all the difference for him. He managed to get noticed as the antagonist to John Abraham’s character in Force and marked a successful debut for him sans romance and dance number. Additionally he got the female fans swooning for him too. We approve Vidyut, we approve.
Another exceptionally talented actor, who has already made a name for himself in the theatre scene of the country, Jim Sarbh’s Bollywood debut was also highly unconventional. As the antagonist in Neerja he stood out simply because of his exceptional acting performance. Neerja, though a niche film, went on to become a big hit at the box-office and we were introduced to this power house of talent named Jim Sarbh that we truly cannot get enough of. We surely owe a thanks to Neerja and Ram Madhvani
