RANKED: Bollywood Films That Featured Debutantes In The Lead According To Their Budget
Updated : October 29, 2018 03:50 PM ISTWithin the very first weekend of its release, Ishaan Khatter and Jahnvi Kapoor starrer Dhadak is on its way to break a few records. For a film that featured two debutantes in the lead, Dhadak has been one of the most talked about films of the year. A part of its fame also came from the fact that both Jahnvi and Ishaan are both star kids and Karan Johar's flamboyant style of production.
In fact, in Bollywood, it is quite rare for producers to invest a large sum of money when both leads of the film are debutantes. Hit and flop aside, these are Bollywood films where both leads for debutantes ranked according to their budget. The budget of older movies have been adjusted for inflation.
Directed by Karan Johar and produced by his production Company Dharma Productions, this film was launchpad for three genY actors, Alia Bhatt, Siddharth Malhotra and Varun. Keeping up with the tradition of Karan Johar films, the film had a high production value and a budget of 60 crores which is the highest for any film with an all debutante lead. However, the film turned out to be a great success and apart from catapulting Sid, Varun and Alia to superstardom collected about 96 crores at the box office.
Yet another Karan Johar production, Dhadak was directed by Shashank Khaitan of the Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya fame. The love saga based on the Marathi blockbuster Sairat with star kids Ishaan Khatter and Jahnvi Kapoor in the lead, was made with a budget of 40 crores, which is pretty lavish for film with a debutante lead. However, the film has already managed to recover almost the budget with a weekend collection of 33 crores approx and is on its way to become a very profitable venture for sure.
Tying with Dhadak, is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Sawaariya which came out in 2007 and was the launchpad another two talked about star kids, Ranbir Kapoor the scion of Bollywood royalty Kapoor family and Sonam Kapoor daughter of the superstar actor Anil Kapoor. Made with a lavish budget of 40 crores, the film did not do too well at the box office but that did not stop Ranbir and Sonam from being instant superstars. Ranbir even received the Filmfare Best Male Debut for his performance.
Yet another pair of star kids were launched with the film Hero directed by Nikhil Advani. Son of actor Aditya Pancholi was launched opposite the daughter of Bollywood’s Anna, Suniel Shetty’s daughter Athiya Shetty. The film was made on a lavish budget of 36 crores and was produced by none other than Salman Khan and Subhash Ghai. The critics thrashes the film severely for the lack of acting talent in both the leads, but that did not stop Sooraj from receiving the Filmfare Best Male Debut Award.
This film was perhaps the most talked about debut ever. Kareena Kapoor, the princess of the royal family of Bollywood, Kapoor family and the son of Bollywood’s biggest superstar Amitabh Bachchan. Director J.P. Dutta launched these two star debutantes with Refugee in 2000 that was made on a budget of 15 crores at that time which was not a meager amount at the time. But if we adjust the amount for inflation then the amount stands close to 27 crores which is actually quite lavish.
Directed by Sabbir Khan, this film was the launched Bollywood superstar Jackie Shroff’s son Tiger Shroff and Kriti Sanon who was a known face in the world of advertising. Heropanti, which was a heady cocktail action, romance, drama and of course dance was made with a budget of 25 crores. The film went on to have quite a successful run at the box-office and Tiger and Kriti were instantly recognized as promising stars of tomorrow. Today they are both doing supremely well in their respective careers.
This might go down in the history of Bollywood as the most successful debut. Directed by Rakesh Roshan, the film launced Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel and was made on a budget of 10 crores in2002. After adjusting for inflation the amount stands somewhere close to 18 crore which is actually not that much considered the film had a record-breaking run at the box-office. Even today Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai is considered one of the milestones of box-office collection in Hindi films.
The best way to describe this film is probably a facepalm emoji. Ranbir Kapoor’s cousin Aadar Jain and newcomer Anya Singh were launched in this film which was made on a budget of 10 crores. Directed by Habib Faisal, it is almost impossible to believe that this is the same director who has made films like Ishaqzaade and the amazing Do Dooni Char. Needless to say both of them have not been seen in any other films since then.
Directed by Raj Kanwar who is known for films like Laadla and Judaai, Ab Ke Baras was the launchpad of Amrita Rao and Raj Babbar’s son, Arya Babbar. The movie that released in 2002 was made on a relatively meager budget of 5 crores, which adjusted for inflation comes at around 8 crores. The film almost sank without a trace at the box office and is one of the least successful debuts at the box-office. Although Arya Babbar fizzled out soon, Amrita Rao had a moderately successful run at the box-office.
This film directed by the talented Shoojit Sircar launched two debutantes and none of them were star kids. Produced by John Abraham, the film was almost made on a shoe string budget 5 crores and launched Ayushmaan Khurrana and Yami Gautam with this quirky and comic take on a serious social issue. The film turned out to be a sleeper hit and Ayushmaan and Yami now belong to the group of promising actors in Bollywood. We seriously want to thank the film for giving us these two stars.
